Islands Cafe is a family owned and operated business established in 2016. My wife Ja and I got the oppurtunity to lease this very cool spot in our home town city center at 1237 Johnston Rd. Infact, the second photo you see in the slide show is the cafe as an empty space full of surfboards. Before I started in the cafe business I made and sold surfboards. For three years I build up a brand to eventually take the entire inventory and sell it all for capital to start this new venture.
The image you see is over 70 boards all sold and the funds used to buy all our equipment and pay our first and last months rent. In Hawaii I had two jobs a real one, which was waiting tables at Turtle Bay on the North Shore of Oahu, and my pretend one surfing! I learned about the food and service industry at the same time I learned about the surf. You might say my entire 20’s education was immersed in both of these industries. In short surfboard were a harder sell in Canada then coffee, and I loved both businesses but it made the most sense to pivot into which we now call Islands! Needless to say our cafes are a representation not just of Hawaii but more specifically the North Shore of Oahu and the surf culture of this most beautiful region in the world. Everything from the food and drinks to the decor of our cafes revolves around Hawaii, surfing, and roasting coffee. Now that you know a bit about our history come have a visit and share some aloha!
